Young People and Volunteering Guide

Sports leadership programme for young people (aged 16 to 18 years)

Recognised by Sport England as an example of national best practice and featured in articles by the National Youth Agency and UK Youth, this programme helps young people to develop their confidence, motivation and skills while promoting access to nationally recognised sports leadership and coaching courses.

During this 10-month programme, volunteers complete a Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership that includes a training course in emergency first aid, attend a selection of Sports Coach UK workshops and participate in regular activity sessions that have previously included:

  • Abseiling
  • Archery
  • Caving
  • Dragon boat racing
  • Go-karting
  • High ropes
  • Rifle shooting
  • Rock climbing
  • Sailing
  • Skiing
  • Snow boarding
  • Snow tubing
  • Ten pin bowling
  • Tobogganing
  • Trampolining

Having completed their training, volunteers are given the chance to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to benefit the local community and also take part in a six-day teambuilding course based in Dartmoor National Park. This residential experience is delivered by Spirit of Adventure (www.spirit-of-adventure.com), one of the leading providers of adventurous activities in southern England.

Volunteers who complete this challenging programme are awarded a coach development grant at their final team presentation. Exit pathways are also established to help those volunteers who are interested in further developing their skills and identifying career opportunities in the local community.
