Sports Leadership and Volunteering
The Howard School Sport Partnership is currently submitting grant applications in an attempt to continue the highly successful sports leadership and volunteering programmes that were previously delivered by Medway Council.
These unique programmes aim to:
- Broaden young peoples’ horizons and enhance their transferable life skills
- Increase opportunities for volunteering in sport
If successful, opportunities for young people will include:
Sports leadership programme for young peopleThis programme helps young people develop their confidence, motivation and skills while promoting access to nationally recognised sports leadership and coaching courses.
Sports leadership programme for young people with special educational needs
This programme helps young people with special educational needs develop their confidence, motivation and skills.
National governing body leadership and officiating awards
These sport-specific awards are designed to support the development of young people in a variety of volunteering roles and help them to become sports leaders and officials.
Intensive two-day leadership courses
These targeted training courses provide young people with the confidence and motivation to help deliver sports activities within the local community.

Sports leadership programme for young people (aged 16 to 18)
Recognised by Sport England as an example of national best practice and featured in articles by the National Youth Agency and UK Youth, this programme helps young people develop their confidence, motivation and skills while promoting access to nationally recognised sports leadership and coaching courses.
During this ten-month programme, volunteers complete a Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership that includes a training course in emergency first aid, attend a selection of Sports Coach UK workshops and participate in regular activity sessions that have previously included:

| Ten pin bowling | Tobogganing | Trampolining |
Having completed their training, volunteers are given the chance to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to benefit the local community and also take part in a six-day teambuilding course based in Dartmoor National Park. This residential experience is delivered by Spirit of Adventure, one of the leading providers of adventurous activities in southern England.
Volunteers who complete this challenging programme are awarded certificates at their final team presentation. Exit pathways have also been established to help those volunteers who are interested in developing their skills further and identifying career opportunities in the local community.

During this six-month programme, volunteers gain experience of teamwork and leadership, participate in regular activity sessions, apply their knowledge and skills to benefit the local community and take part in a six-day teambuilding course based in Dartmoor National Park. This residential experience is delivered by Spirit of Adventure, one of the leading providers of adventurous activities in southern England.
Volunteers who complete this challenging programme are awarded certificates including a Youth Achievement Award at their final team presentation. Exit pathways have also been established to help those volunteers who are interested in developing their skills further and identifying career opportunities in the local community.

Sports coach register
Are you a qualified sports coach or assistant sports coach?
Are you interested in sports development?
Then why not register as a sports coach with Medway Council now?
This register will:
- Help Medway Council publicise coach development opportunities
- Provide an invaluable resource for schools and other community organisations looking for coaches to develop local sports provisions
Sports coaches must be at least 16 years of age at the time of registration and will be subject to a satisfactory enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure.

Sports code of practice: Supporting schools to deliver out-of-hours (on-site) sporting activities involving adults other than teachers
Although there is no intention to stop current practices overnight, this revised code of practice explains the considerations that are essential in the planning and delivery of out-of-hours (on-site) sporting activities involving adults other than teachers. It is intended that by following these guidelines, practices will be improved, risks reduced and the welfare, safety and education of pupils safeguarded in accordance with Every Child Matters.

This short-term loan facility can be accessed free-of-charge and is intended to help sports coaches; teachers and youth/community workers increase sports participation and create an awareness of healthy lifestyles through physical activities for general health promotion.
